On Showing God Your Gratefulness for His Love

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.””

Luke 7:47

In this story of a woman anointing Jesus, the woman realised her deep need of a Savior. Someone who will forgive her sins, and willing to accept her offering as a compensation for what she has done. She showed her heart to Jesus by weeping her tears on Jesus’ feet using her hair and by giving Jesus her most expensive perfume. To the eyes of self-righteous people, that woman is not worthy of any forgiveness. We can just imagine how worse her sins are for being so immoral, and yet Jesus has seen her heart and goes ahead in forgiven her.

As I read this passage, it made me realise that how much we show love to God is the reflection of how we know how much we are forgiven. It may seem a little vague and ordinary of a concept, but as I reflect on this deeply enough, God greatly appreciates the love shown to Him by what we offer to Him everyday.

We don’t need to have extravagant things to offer to God, He has it all. But what’s important is how we live our everyday life showing our love towards Him. This everyday devotion to God is shown in Apostle Paul’s letter to Colossians, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23) God is interested in the devotion and state of our heart. It is in these small obedience that we can show how much we love God and how much we are grateful for adopting us into His family through Jesus Christ.

One may ask, “my life is ordinary just like everybody else. Should I do extravagant things for me to be able to show God how big my life is for Him?” In this story of the sinful woman, she gave everything she has to Jesus. Maybe her perfume is one of her most treasured possessions, though one thing that we can learn from this woman is that she gave all that she has. Jesus is not interested on how much we can give Him.

We can never out give God, we can never outdo His goodness. We can offer so many of our beloved riches but our hearts can be far away from Him. We can show love to God by how much we give ourselves to Him-to His Lordship. By how much we give our broken hearts & our shattered souls to His loving arms. That is how we can show our love to God, by expressing our every day devotion to Him shown by our acts of faith everyday.
